Poker Lingo
- -Hand Notation
- Notation is usually a rank (AKQJT98765432) and a suit (cdhs), such as AhKd. Suited or off-suit maybe noted with an s/o such as AKs or QJo.
- -Position Notation
- In a ten handed game the positions are, in order of action after the flop: Small Blind(SB), Big Blind(BB), Under the Gun(UTG), UTG+1, UTG+2, UTG+3. UTG+4, Hijack, Cutoff and Dealer Button(D)
- Addon
- Additional money given to the tournament prize pool in exchange for more chips, usually when the tournament closes. Not offered in most tournaments.
- Allin
- To bet all of your chip stack.
- Alternate
- A player waiting to play in a tournament that is full. When a player busts out the tournament, the alternate will be seated to play.
- Bad Beat
- To have a extremely good hand lose to someone with a far inferior hand.
- Bankroll
- Amount of money you have set aside for playing poker, It should be much larger than the amount you are putting in play in any one session.
- Blank
- A card that does not help any obvious draws. Usually on the Turn or River.
- Board
- The 5 community cards used by all players in Texas Holdem in conjunction with their 2 pocket cards. Consists of the Flop (3 cards), Turn (1 card) and River (1 card).
- Boat
- Another name for a full house, KKK88 for example.
- Broadway
- The best straight, AKQJT.
- Busted
- To lose all of your chip stack. AKA felted.
- Case Card
- The last card of a rank. If you have JJJ and your opponent has QQQ you need the case J to win.
- Cracked
- See bad beat.
- Dealer Addon
- Additional money paid in a tournament that serves as the dealers tip. Additional chips are given to the player for the addon.
- Dominated
- One hand dominates another when the high card is the same, but the better kicker wins. KQ dominates KJ. The KJ hand is in bad shape if a king comes on the board.
- Donkey
- A derogatory term to describe a bad player.
- Double Belly Buster
- A straight draw that needs one of two specific card ranks to complete. But not four ranks in a row. AQJT8 for example, a K or 9 would make a straight.
- Flop
- The 1st 3 community cards placed on the board.
- Gutshot Straight Draw
- A draw to a straight that requires one specific card rank to complete.AKJT for example.
- Inside Straight Draw
- See gutshot straight draw.
- Limp
- To call the big blind.
- Limped Pot
- When all the players involved in the pot just called the big blind, no raises.
- Multi-Table Tournament (MTT)
- A tournament, usually scheduled to start at a specific time, with seating for as many players as expected to show up. If more players are interested than seats, they may be allowed to play as alternates. As play progresses the tables are consolidated until a final table is reached.
- Open Ended Straight Draw
- A straight draw that needs one of two specific card ranks to complete. Four ranks in a row.KQJT for example.
- Open Period
- Usually the first hour or half hour of a tournament, a period of time when additional players can buy in to the tournament that is in progress.
- Pocket Cards
- The 2 concealed cards given to each player, before community cards are dealt.
- Position
- Where you are in relation to the button. early, middle or late position. Late position is considered an advantage.
- Pot
- The contested chips in the middle of the table.
- Race
- Two hands that are statistically close to even to win the pot. AK versus QQ is considered a classic race.
- Rainbow
- Refers to a flop that is of 3 different suits, no real flush possibilities.
- Read
- To say you have a read on a player is to say you understand their playing style.
- Ring Game
- Most people call this a Cash game. Money is exchanged for chips of equal value, and players may join or leave at their own convience. Leaving the table temporarily stops play for your stack only, and you do not pay blinds for this time.
- River
- The 5th community card placed on the board.
- Runner Runner
- A hand that is completed by the Turn and River cards, low probability of hitting this draw.
- Seat
- There are usually 10 seats at a poker table, numbering starts at the left of the dealer.
- Sit-n-Go
- A single table tournament, that runs when enough players have signed up.
- Stack
- Amount of chips you have in front of you at the poker table.
- Straddle
- In a ring game, before cards are dealt, a player in the UTG position can put a 3rd blind out, double the big blind. This can also continue along the players for a double straddle, triple straddle etc. although multiple straddles are rare.
- Table Bully
- An aggressive player, creating alot of action with lots of bets and raises.
- Table Image
- Your table image is your playing style, as percieved by other players at the table. You should try to be aware of what the table thinks of you.
- Texas Holdem
- A form of poker where all players are given 2 concealed pocket cards, and a board of 5 community cards. Best 5 card hand of the 7 cards wins a showdown.
- Tournament
- A money buyin for chips (not of equal value). Play progresses until there is a single winner, or a prize chop is agreed upon. Leaving the table does not stop the play and your chips are blinded out.
- Turn
- The 4th community card placed on the board.
- Under the Gun (UTG)
- This position is the first to act after the big blind.
- Wheel
- The worst straight, A2345
